In a fugue, after the first voice presents the subject, a second voice plays the subject transposed by a fifth or a fourth, which is called the answer. There are two types of answer: a real answer, in which the transposition is exact; and a tonal answer, in which some intervals are altered for harmonic or tonal reasons (for example, a fifth may become a fourth).
